Interestingly, the scientific community's view that so-called intelligent design is not scientific is hardly new. Over 800 years ago Adelard of Bath wrote that supernatural causes should not be invoked as an explanation for natural phenomena. He noted that reliance on supernatural explanations was the refuge of those unwilling to do the hard work needed to identify natural causes. He had it right.
